How Symbaloo Protects your Data Against Cyber Attacks

Cybersecurity has become increasingly important in recent years as online shopping, payments, and banking have gained more prominence. As we navigate the web on computers and phones, it's vital to ensure that our identities, passwords, and personal information remain secure. In this blog post, we will explain how Symbaloo keeps your data and web browsing experience as safe as possible.

What Symbaloo does to keep your data safe.

Symbaloo is continually working to build a safer platform. We do this through enhanced password security, regular software updates, and a comprehensive privacy policy that puts our users first. Read below to learn more.

Passwords

When you create an account on Symbaloo, the password you create is transformed into a 'hash' before being stored by our database. A 'hash' is a unique, encrypted string of characters that is only readable by our system. While a password can be transformed into a hash, a hash cannot be deciphered to uncover a password. This process safeguards your data in the unlikely event that our database becomes compromised by bad actors - ensuring that your password remains unreadable. Learn more about hashes in this video.

In addition to using hashes, Symbaloo also incorporates password-salting. A salt will automatically add additional characters to a password prior to hashing, making the password even more difficult to crack. The image on the right shows an example of a hash.

Software updates

Most of us are familiar with that moment when your computer decides to do an automatic update - often at inconvenient times. When this happens, your operating software is usually installing security updates to make sure that you are protected from the latest hacks and vulnerabilities. While it may be bothersome, this is a necessary practice for web-connected tools to stay one step ahead of potential security breaches.

In the same essence, Symbaloo servers also receive regular updates and maintenance to keep your data safe and resist cybersecurity threats. However, our updates happen in the background and ensure that the platform's functionality is uninterrupted - no need to twiddle your thumbs for 15 minutes and wait!

Peer reviews

The Symbaloo application is written in several programming languages, which are well-known by all of our programmers. Every language has a specific use inside the application. One language ensures that the database is running smoothly. Another language is used to ensure that the application looks aesthetically pleasing. The total package of all of these languages makes Symbaloo.

The total package that comprises Symbaloo is complex, and an error can be easily made. To counter this challenge, we use peer reviews to identify and correct problematic code before we deploy any new functions. In a peer review, other programmers proofread the code and highlight any errors. Updates are only deployed after all errors have been resolved and new functions have been thoroughly tested in a test environment.

In addition, Symbaloo uses a 'bug bounty program' that allows programmers from around the globe to review our code and earn gift cards for finding security leaks and vulnerabilities.

Privacy

Symbaloo makes it simple to save your favorite websites and bookmarks, but to do this; we do not have to store loads of data. In contrast to other large platforms, Symbaloo does not save each user click or feed the data into an algorithm. We only store as much data as is necessary to operate the platform seamlessly.

The small amount of data we save is stored securely on a server in Amsterdam, near our company's headquarters in The Netherlands. Our servers are protected by a firewall, ensuring no access to the outside world. The web server that communicates with your browser runs automatic back-ups to ensure you never lose your saved Tiles, Webmixes, or Account Settings. Furthermore, if any damage occurs to our database, we can always recover it using our data backups.
